Use of Coded Language

Use of Coded Language

Through a robust quantitative and qualitative analysis of all 67 presidential inauguration speeches, we see a number of distinct themes. These themes include the use of coded language, changes in equality, and white savior/repression. Out of all terms, coded presidents used an average of 16.35 terms within their speeches.

One of the themes that present itself through the analysis is the use of coded language. The use of coded language has allowed presidents to speak about race without explicitly presenting their views on the subject. It also allows them to preview possible agenda items that they wish to implement. Throughout history, we have seen presidents use coded language in several different ways. The most common use of coded language was when talking about states’ rights, the criminal justice system, and in some cases patriotism.
